How to Help a Friend

If you think something's wrong with a friend, it's important to know what to notice. Any of these signs, or even just a gut feeling, can indicate a problem. For more information, click here.

Academic signs:

  • Changes in focus or attention academically
  • Lower quality of work, decline in performance
  • Increased absences from class

Physical signs:

  • Changes in weight, sleeping patterns, eating habits, and/or hygiene
  • Noticeble cuts or other self-harm
  • Alcohol and drug abuse

Emotional signs:

  • Emotional outbursts
  • Feelings/expression of hopelessness and worthlessness

How to help:

  • Be discreet
  • Be nonjudgemental
  • Ask open-ended questions
  • Listen
  • Refer to a professional
